North Faced Jackets

Let's start a indie rock band
and write songs with nautical themes,
songs with really long titles that could pass
so easily for Willy Wonka memes.
Let's make big, big plans,
plans that will never probably happen,
let's be small town kids
content with what life hands them.
I said, "This is a song that I wrote, trying to sound like Tigers Jaw"
but it turned into: "these are the thoughts that I thought,
while driving to work in my car."
And those thoughts go: blah, blah, blah
Someday we'll tell our kids
about the hours we spent staring at screens on phones,
someday we'll worry about our kids
and whether they know the difference between being lonely and being alone
I said, "This is a song that I wrote, trying to sound like Tigers Jaw"
but it turned into: "these are the thoughts that I thought,
while driving to work in my car."
And they go:
It's time for us to face the facts,
that some of us are meant for shame more than glory,
that some of us are meant to play the townspeople
in the background of someone else's more interesting story.
So let's start a band or something man,
cause I'm feeling tired, I'm feeling worn down.
Finally owning up to those aforementioned facts,
that we'll (I'll) never leave behind this small town.

Empty Urn
04:29
|
|||
Are you still
my best friend?
deafened by the clock's tick?
filling up the empty urn?
needing me to ask you a question?
Are you fighting hard as can be or do you see what you want to see?
Are you still
living in the shadow of the arch?
looking for stickers on cars?
glad you can't hear what people think?
afraid to be alone?
Are you fighting hard as can be or do you see what you want to see?
Are you alive or just a ghost in my mind?
Are you still
afraid of the big ocean waves?
gonna die on a mountain top?
pretty sure God doesn't exist?
missing me?
Are you fighting hard as can be or do you see what you want to see?
Are you alive or just a ghost in my mind?
Have your scars all faded away or are your demons out to play?
Is this finally enough for you, is there another life you choose?
Is this finally enough for you, is there another life you choose?

Toyota Corolla

We were drinking from the bottles
we hadn't broken on the sidewalk just yet
in your toyota corolla, we were belting out:
"You're calling me a safe bet"
And you were leaving for war the next day,
we swore over and over that things would stay the same,
but then when you returned,
you weren't, they weren't, we weren't
Then, eating at an all night diner,
talking the existence of God,
when an old man walked in and told us
that he had been abducted by aliens.
Later on the drive home
I mumbled "show me a sign"
a transformer exploded on the power line
and you and I were both baptized
in that blue light.
That was the summer,
that Mom passed away
we all felt a hole growing in the middle of our chest
knowing that things would never be the same
when Dad pointed out to me
a solitary little blue bird on the clothesline
he said, "That right there Dane, that's our sign that she made it to heaven all right."
alright.

Jello Shots

You always said, "Man, you look like you could use some sleep."
That's what you always said to me.
But I know you were being nice,
you really meant, "Man, you look like shit"
And I probably did,
cause that's what I felt like then.
I still remember that party in college where I cheered
while two drunk girls kissed,
and I'm embarrassed now of my younger self
and for thinking it was as cool as I did.
I think of that now, and all those times I blended in,
which coincided with all the times I let you down,
which overlapped with all the times I was not your friend.
The first time we were snowed in for real,
we shared everything just to try and feel,
and we drank all that would not freeze,
we'll spend the next several years looking for the keys.
we'll roll that boulder up the hill, just to watch it roll back down again.
